Dental Practice: the Leap Frog Theory
In this article, I would like to share with you one theory that you can relate with the kind of outlook that you have in your dental practice
right now. And this is the “Leap Frog Theory”. This theory can help you think and ponder upon how you look at yourself and how you are doing in your dental practice today. And this is something we focus specifically at our dental practice website!
Now take for instance, you decided you’re going to jump to the top of whatever it is, and you’re going to be able to achieve that certain kind of goal. So for example, if your goal is in increasing your income in your dental practice and you want to be in a million dollar practice, or you want to be in a 2 million dollar practice. And the second part of this is that from a mindset perspective, you have to go and create the self-image of a doctor who deserves to win a practice that way, and you have to have the self-belief of a doctor who can win a practice that way! One of the best books on this is “The Psychology of Winning” by Dennis Waitley. And what Waitley said is that we will always live up to the level of expectation that our self-image allows us to. And there is a good example here. Let’s say we have a thermometer in a room, and you set it at 69º Celsius, and so everytime it gets a little bit warmer in the room and it starts to go higher than expected, the AC will kick on and cool down the room, so it comes back to 69º Celsius. And what happens so much in our life is that once we start experiencing successes that are bigger and grander than our level of self-expectation, we then turn on our “mental thermometer” that kind of brings us back down to reality (which is a false reality by the way.. one that is congruent with our self-image!). And so what I like to tell people is that “Hey, if you want to achieve certain goals, you need to first develop the self-image of a person who deserves that, who believes in that, who emanates that with every fiber of your being.. who sends that kind of energy to the world!” So, if you want to make any kind of goal that you can think of in your life, and you say “This is my goal!”. And you need to envision your mind with a perfect, crystal-clarity of precisely what that goal is… and every single day you need to be sending that out! And one of the strategies that I teach is that, say now at the present moment, you should go out and write out all your goals.. and put yourself precisely where you want to be within one year. And then see yourself how you’re breathing, how you’re moving, how you’re smiling.. and you’re having fun with this thing that you’re creating! And it’s because your brain is like a magnet; it will go right to precisely what you give it. So you have to make sure that you have that vision and that image. And the second part of all that is you then ask yourself: “What is my belief?” or “What is my self-belief?”. You see, beliefs are one of the most powerful things, because beliefs are actually changeable all the time! And what I mean by this is that we usually get our beliefs based on our past performance. Now, the good news about this is that if you have done some successful things in the past, then you probably have some positive beliefs about yourself. But the bad news, on the other hand, is that in order to get to another level, you have to create new beliefs, new sources, new references in your past that will allow you to go and say “Hey look, I can do this, and I will get better at this, and I believe in myself!”. And so, one of the things that I would like to do is when I send my goals out there and I look out there and I see myself, I like to fly out into the future (that’s right, literally, like in my mind I leave my body and I fly out into the future… and I go into the body of myself one year from now) and then I ask myself:”What belief systems must I have in order to accomplish these things?” and I don’t always get the answer right away. But the answer that usually comes is that “If I want to grow my practice or business by two times, then I need to believe that I’m probably going to need more staff…” and that’s okay. And my other belief is that I’m going to find a way to make my marketing work for me! Now, it may be tough, but I’m going to find a way to make that marketing work, and I’m going to create systems to make it work. And I need to believe that I have the ability to find the right people to help create systems within my dental practice. I believe that in one year I can have this practice running either 60% or 80% without me having to be involved. If you want bring out an associate, ask yourself: “What belief systems must you have in order to accept having an associate?”. So that’s where we’re going. Now the question here is: “Are you capable enough?”. Then the answer should be “Yes…Absolutely!”. And you might ask yourself “What capabilities do I need to acquire?”. So after you go with your belief, the other strategy that I want to share with you is that you have to have powerful “self-talk”. When I’m in a room with an audience of people and I say to them: “Hey, how many of you talk to yourselves?” and I ask them to raise their hands. And about half of the people in the room raise their hands. And the other half does something kind of interesting: they start looking around and see who raises their hand… and when they see it they say to themselves “I dont know, do I talk to myself?”… and I say “Well, that’s talking to yourself!”. So if you’re asking “Am I talking to myself?”, that’s talking to yourself! You see, we have this little voice inside our heads. Years ago, I studied with Jack Canfield, the author of “Chicken Soup For The Soul”, and he said we have about 50,000 to 60,000 thoughts a day, and about 90% of those thoughts are the same thoughts we had the day before, and 90% of those are negative! So when we’re on our own “auto-pilot”, telling ourselves about the things that we can’t do, or we’re not able to do, or what’s going wrong, and we’re so focused on what’s negative that we never stop and reverse the whole process and look on to the future and focus only that on which we want to accomplish. So, the thing here is that always think positive, and accomplish the goals that you want to have in your dental practice… and in your life as well!
